Lost lagoons: painting with light

When it comes to painting with light having lots of hands and lots of strobes and lots of patients is major key. Colored gels on strobes helped create this mystical but realistic looking lagoon scene at Devil’s Icebox in Columbia, Missouri.

Six miles from the University of Missouri, in Columbia, Missouri, at Rock Bridge Memorial State Park is home to the Devil’s Icebox; an underground spring and cave system. The park is open sunset to sunset year round for the public and periodically hosts hiking related events, Wednesday April 26, 2017. © Whitney Matewe, Emily Johnson, Daniel Mung and Gabby Reneau.

We had to a lot of finessing to get the light not to create trails as we moved across our frame and light up our scene and subject. But once we figured out that hiding our strobes with our own bodies was the best way to get rid of the trails we had more control of our scene and painted for reality.
